What Residents Said at the June 24 Public Input Session

The town’s Liberty Ledge / Sewataro Advisory Committee (LLSAC) is gathering resident input on the future of the Sewataro property.

Here are my notes from the public input session I attended on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, by Laura Briggs

I walked into the large conference room at the Community Center to find round tables set up with big sheets of paper, post-its, pens, and stickers. I intentionally sat with people I didn’t know, to hear a fresh perspective — the three of us had different viewpoints and had a great two hours together.

The format was simple: share your ideas and long-term vision for the land; refine them as a group; write your personal favorites on post-its; then walk the room and rank everyone’s ideas 1–4 with colored stickers.

The results — the community’s top four

#1 — Continue the camp with a long-term agreement. The clear winner: keep Camp Sewataro going under a long-term operating agreement with the current operator, with incentives for capital improvements, plus ideas like 5K races with food trucks and swimming and lifeguard lessons.

#2 — Expand community programming outside camp hours. A farmers market, fall festival, community garden, green space, concerts, outdoor movie nights, a home base for the Scouts.

#3 — Conservation and natural resources. Keep the property as camp and green space — no development — and cultivate native plants, trees, and pollinators.

#4 — Arts, culture, and heritage. Art studios, weekly concerts, and kid- and teen-friendly programming that gets screens down and gets everyone outside.

Nearly 200 distinct ideas were shared that evening. One of my personal favorites — connecting Sewataro to the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail — showed up on other tables’ boards too.

The takeaway was hard to miss: residents want to keep Sewataro whole, keep the camp, and build on it for the whole community.
