Sharing my notes from the Parks & Recreation Commission call regarding the Sewataro property, by Laura Briggs
Fall Programming at Sewataro
The discussion regarding Fall programming was very positive, with Sarah Ernst and Vivian Zeng expressing their support and shared collaboration with the camp staff for the following new Fall programming.
Sarah Ernst announced three programs at Sewataro this Fall:
- Intro to Fishing
- Puddle Stompers (pre-school nature exploration class)
- Nature Explorers (ages 6–11 science & the outdoors)
Sarah also discussed ideas for Fall community events:
- Map out property to have a trail run (vs. a 5K)
- Pavilion spaces are great — you can host events rain or shine, such as line dancing or a DJ music event
- Hoping to plan a huge Halloween event in the trails
It was also noted that Sewataro is a great location for disc golf, and P&R could offer programming using the Sewataro kids golf driving range.

PRC Statement to the LLSAC
The conversation then pivoted to Granger’s request to draft a PRC statement to the LLSAC Sewataro Committee regarding the Sewataro property.
Vivian Zeng commented she is appreciative of the draft statement by Granger, as both she and Sarah want to partner with Sewataro to increase recreational programming at the Sewataro property.
Granger suggested that P&R think of Sewataro as one of our P&R user groups — effectively they are a P&R group, as they sit on our land that the Town owns.
Bullet #2 in the draft, which stated “minimize any non-recreation development of the property so as to not impede on future programming and use possibilities,” proved difficult for the group to come to consensus on.
As shared by Mara Huston: “There is a lot of space here. We don’t have to hog it all for recreation. There might be one or two lots that can be used for affordable housing, which benefits the town in terms of 40B development.”
The group decided to eliminate bullet #2 and voted on their final version of the PRC statement to LLSAC:
Park and Recreation Commission — Liberty Ledge Property Statement (August 2026)
The Park and Recreation Commission sees unique value in the Liberty Ledge property for the Town of Sudbury to access recreation opportunities that promote mental and physical health for all our residents. The parcel offers unique features that complement our other town spaces and unlock new programming possibilities for both active and passive recreation. We see potential to realize this benefit for the town residents in conjunction with summer camp operations.
We support the Park and Recreation Department’s effort to increase formal recreation programming at the Liberty Ledge property. Therefore, we advocate that the LLSAC Committee and the Select Board members implement a use agreement and management process for the property that fosters development of Park and Recreation Programming now and into the future.
